The shop

John Miklatek, behind the counter.

Food Liberation is a neighborhood health market on Lexington between 89th and 90th. Independent. Unhurried. The kind of place where the owner still explains the bottle.

The owner

John Miklatek

Neighbors know him as John, and they come back because he is honest about what he will not sell. He has kept this shop on the Upper East Side as a working cabinet: vitamins, supplements, herbs, teas, clean snacks, and a smoothie worth crossing the block for.

He is honest about what he will not sell, and he will not dump a cart on someone who has not been heard.

The block

1349 Lexington Avenue

A compact shop, not a warehouse. Food Liberation has been on this stretch of Lexington for decades — a health-food store that still behaves like a neighborhood counter. Silence your phone. Ask the question. Leave with the right bottle, or a blueberry smoothie, or both.

Call (212) 348-2286 or walk in. Food Liberation, 1349 Lexington Ave, between 89th & 90th, New York, NY 10128.

From the neighborhood

Kind. Knowledgeable. Only the good stuff.

“This store is a hidden gem. John is not only honest and kind, but he is knowledgeable and only carries the best products.”
Elisa
“Small but personable. The owner was kind enough to explain many things to me. Only high quality stuff.”
Samridhi G.
“What I like about this place is the knowledge of the people who work there. Their concern with the individual's health seems to be the main ingredient. The blueberry smoothie is the best in the vicinity.”
Willie B.
“Beautiful spotless store with a wide variety of products. Owner extremely knowledgeable and polite.”
